(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/5/17) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on President Trump to demand an end to the denial of religious freedom for Chinese Christians and Uighur Muslims during his meeting on Thursday with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“When President Trump meets with President Xi Jinping, he must publicly call for an end to the escalating oppression of Uighur Muslims, Christians and other people of faith,” said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad. “Discussing trade and currency manipulation is not sufficient. International norms of religious freedom are just as important as economic issues.”
Earlier this month, China announced a counterproductive policy that would ban Uighur Muslims from growing beards and wearing religious attire in a purported effort to “counter extremism.” Last year, China banned civil servants, teachers and students from fasting during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. China has also targeted Christians, forcibly installing security cameras inside Chinese churches over the past week.
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
La misión de CAIR es mejorar la comprensión del Islam, fomentar el diálogo, proteger las libertades civiles, capacitar a los musulmanes estadounidenses, y construir coaliciones que promuevan la justicia y la comprensión mutua.
