YARKAND, China–Two days after an armed group assaulted local government offices and a police station here, security officials blocked traffic from entering the area around the crime scene.

Dozens of Uighurs and Han Chinese were killed or injured in the July 28 attack.

Armed police set up a barricade on an unpaved road in Yarkand county in Kashgar, the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, on July 30.

The apparent leader of the officers took the passport from the hand of an Asahi reporter. While the officer was asking his superior for instructions, another official repeatedly checked photos stored in the reporter’s mobile phone.

The reporter was later told to leave the area. When asked for a reason, an officer just reiterated, “The traffic has been blocked.” Officials also said they knew nothing about what had happened there.

A police car then escorted the reporter’s vehicle to the county border.
