A 10th Uighur man who broke out of the Nong Khai Immigration Centre’s detention facility in September was recaptured at a market in Udon Thani’s Muang district on Thursday night.

Rashit Hashim, 22, said that after escaping he hid in a forest following the re-arrests of the other escapees and then walked along a railway track at night to Udon Thani, said Nong Khai Immigration Office chief Police Colonel Pallop Suriyakul na Ayutthaya. The suspect said he fled with Bt4,000 but the money was running out when he was nabbed, Pallop revealed.

In his backpack police found Bt408, a cell phone, a power bank, a flashlight, clothes and hair dye.

Hashim was arrested after the Nong Sin community leader alerted police that a man resembling the Uighur fugitive was seen buying a cell phone at a market. Hashim told police that he was hoping to use the phone to contact friends to help him reach Malaysia and eventually return to Turkey.

Hashim was among 10 Uighur male suspects, aged 20-41, who were arrested for illegally entering Thailand in July and sent to the detention facility in Nong Khai, which they broke out of early in the morning on September 20 during heavy rain.

Nine escapees were arrested on the same day at a Muang Nong Khai cemetery after a massive hunt.

Hashim, who has fled authorities four times, has been charged with breaking out of an immigration detention centre and destroying state property.
