The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/10\/20\/world\/asia\/at-least-22-reportedly-killed-in-attack-in-western-china.html?rref=world\/asia&amp;module=Ribbon&amp;version=context&amp;region=Header&amp;action=click&amp;contentCollection=Asia%20Pacific&amp;pgtype=article&amp;_r=0&amp;assetType=nyt_now\"><strong>New York Times cites RFA in their coverage<\/strong><\/a> of the October 12 incident:<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-right:25px; padding-left:25px;\">\n<p>An attack on a farmers market in the western Chinese region of Xinjiang has reportedly left at least 22 people dead and dozens injured, Radio Free Asia, the news service financed by the American government, has reported.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/uyghur\/attack-10182014194433.html\" title=\"The report.\">Radio Free Asia said<\/a>&nbsp;on Saturday that the rampage, which took place Oct. 12 in Kashgar Prefecture, was carried out by four men armed with knives and explosives who attacked police officers and merchants before being shot dead by the police. Most of the victims were ethnic Han Chinese and the assailants were ethnic Uighur, the news service said, citing local police officials.<\/p>\n<p>One officer, Hashim Eli, said the assailants were local men who arrived on motorcycles at 10:30 a.m. &ldquo;Two of them attacked police officers patrolling the street while the other two attacked the Han Chinese stall owners who were just entering the market to open their stores,&rdquo; Radio Free Asia quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n<p>A man who answered the phone at the police station in Bachu County, where the attack took place, declined to comment, saying he was not authorized to speak to reporters. [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/10\/20\/world\/asia\/at-least-22-reportedly-killed-in-attack-in-western-china.html?rref=world\/asia&amp;module=Ribbon&amp;version=context&amp;region=Header&amp;action=click&amp;contentCollection=Asia%20Pacific&amp;pgtype=article&amp;_r=0&amp;assetType=nyt_now\"><strong>Source<\/strong><\/a>]\n<\/div>\n<p>This is the latest of <a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/china\/xinjiang-violence\/\">many recent violent attacks in Xinjiang<\/a>, and comes as authorities <a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2014\/08\/inside-chinas-escalating-war-terror\/\">continue a massive security crackdown in the region<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing exercises <a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2014\/08\/china-controls-narrative-violence-xinjiang\/\">strict control of the media narrative in Xinjiang<\/a>, effectively barring journalists&nbsp;access&nbsp;from&nbsp;scenes of&nbsp;unrest.
