Last year, Shohret\u2019s three brothers were jailed for \u201cviolating state security laws\u201d and allegedly \u201cleaking state secrets\u201d after discussing the sentencing of one of the brothers in a phone call with Shohret. In early January, after being briefed by RFA about the situation, CPJ published a <a href=\"http:\/\/cpj.org\/blog\/2015\/01\/chinas-long-distance-tactic-to-suppress-uighur-cov.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog entry<\/a> about the case, which prompted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/china-uses-long-range-intimidation-of-us-reporter-to-suppress-xinjiang-coverage\/2015\/01\/08\/1098c8ab-6a12-449d-87f4-8654e2f4c5ab_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Washington Post<\/em><\/a> and news wires (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/china-uses-long-range-intimidation-of-us-reporter-to-suppress-xinjiang-coverage\/2015\/01\/08\/1098c8ab-6a12-449d-87f4-8654e2f4c5ab_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AP<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/world\/china-denies-retaliation-against-uighur-journalists-family\/ar-AA7Xuex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AFP<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2015\/01\/09\/us-china-xinjiang-idUSKBN0KI0BC20150109\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a>) to also file reports. The case has also been mentioned in recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/fred-hiatt-china-steps-up-the-repression\/2015\/01\/11\/adf1551c-9825-11e4-927a-4fa2638cd1b0_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">editorials<\/a> responding to attacks on media freedoms around the world.<\/p>\n<p>State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki, at a Jan. 8 press briefing, said, \u201cWe urge Chinese authorities to cease harassment of [Shohret Hoshur\u2019s] family and to treat them fairly and with dignity. We continually urge China to respect internationally recognized human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression.\u201d RFA\u2019s reporter has been contacted by officers from State Department to discuss his case.
