{"id":1978,"date":"2015-08-06T02:24:16","date_gmt":"2015-08-06T02:24:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iuhrdf.org\/en\/2015\/08\/06\/chinese-police-arrest-women-wearing-burqas-henan\/"},"modified":"2015-08-06T02:24:16","modified_gmt":"2015-08-06T02:24:16","slug":"chinese-police-arrest-women-wearing-burqas-henan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/chinese-police-arrest-women-wearing-burqas-henan\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese police arrest women wearing burqas in Henan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group of women dressed in black burqas was taken away by armed police in the Henan province in China earlier this week.<\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>By Victoria Ho<br \/>2015-08-04<\/p>\n<p>A group of women dressed in black burqas was&nbsp;taken away by armed police in the Henan province in China earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>A Weibo user <a href=\"http:\/\/weibo.com\/1403915120\/CtYTSufXw?from=page_1005051403915120_profile&amp;wvr=6&amp;mod=weibotime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted pictures<\/a> of the commotion on the streets.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/uyghuramerican.org\/images\/henan-burqa2.jpg\"><br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/uyghuramerican.org\/images\/henan-burqa1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Chinese news reports, the women were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.4hw.com.cn\/new\/shnews\/93341.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shoe shopping<\/a> on a side street when the authorities showed up and spoke to them in a &#8220;minority language,&#8221; likely the Uyghur tongue spoken by the Muslim ethnic minority in China and not the national language, Mandarin.<\/p>\n<p>Muslims made up a 1.3% minority in Henan in 2012, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henan#cite_note-CFPS2012-16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">census report<\/a>. Protestant Christians were the next bigger minority group at 5.6%.<\/p>\n<p>The arrests follow the January decision to ban burqas in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, where the largest community of Muslims in China lives.
