The Committee to Protect Journalists reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.7999992370605px;\">18, 2015 2:03 PM<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.7999992370605px;\"><strong>Update: Trial of RFA reporter\u2019s brother in China could start on Wednesday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.7999992370605px;\">After&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/blog\/2015\/06\/radio-free-asia-reporters-brothers-in-china-face-a.php\" style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 153); border-style: none; border-width: initial;\">several false start dates<\/a>, the trial of Rexim Hoshur, the brother of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/blog\/2015\/01\/chinas-long-distance-tactic-to-suppress-uighur-cov.php\" style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 153); border-style: none; border-width: initial;\">Shohret Hoshur<\/a>, a Radio Free Asia (RFA) reporter based in Washington, is now scheduled to start on Wednesday in Urumqi, the capital of China\u2019s predominantly Muslim Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Another brother, Shawket, could come to trial next month, RFA says. Though neither of the brothers are journalists, they are charged with \u201cleaking state secrets,\u201d an accusation often used to silence journalists and bloggers within China. Another of Hoshur\u2019s brothers, Tudaxun, was sentenced to five years in prison last year on similar state security charges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.7999992370605px;\">RFA told CPJ by email today that family is barred from attending the trial, though their lawyer is trying to get a permit for a sister to attend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.7999992370605px;\">It seems very clear that the Hoshur family is being punished because of Shohret\u2019s work for RFA. CPJ and many others have been watching this case unfold over the last eight months or so, hoping for some sort of intervention on the part of the United States on behalf of an American journalist. In addition to the considerable international media coverage, in July Senators Mark Warner and Marco Rubio sent a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry, asking him \u201cto make clear to the Chinese government that Mr. Hoshur\u2019s case is a priority for the Department of State[.]\u201d U.S. Journalists have also raised the case with Ambassador Max Baucus in Beijing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.7999992370605px;\">Despite this pressure from so many sides, it seems possible that whenever the trial does go ahead, that Rexim, like&nbsp;his brother Tudaxun, will be found guilty of some sort of overly broad state security violation, given the increasingly harsh anti-media policies that swept in with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpj.org\/blog\/2014\/07\/ever-broader-restrictions-handed-down-for-chinas-r.php\" style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 153); border-style: none; border-width: initial;\">President Xi Jinping<\/a>. Over the more than six decades of Communist Party rule, media suppression in China has followed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2009\/02\/media-freedom-china.php\" style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 153); border-style: none; border-width: initial;\">a cyclical pattern<\/a>&nbsp;of loosening and tightening again, but the current downturn that came in with the Xi government seems by far the deepest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.7999992370605px;\">Last month&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/08\/01\/world\/asia\/a-voice-from-chinas-uighur-homeland-reporting-from-the-united-states.html\" style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 153); border-style: none; border-width: initial;\">the New York Times profiled Shohret Hoshur<\/a>&nbsp;and his work for RFA.
