:<\/em><\/p>\nAs Washington prepares to roll out the red carpet next week for Chinese Communist Party chief Xi Jinping\u2019s first state visit to the United States, prominent Chinese dissidents, rights activists, and journalists gathered in Congress to present testimony on China\u2019s dismal human rights record.<\/p>\n
On the agenda for discussion was the mass crackdown of rights defense lawyers, repression of Internet freedom, and the persecution of Uyghurs, Tibetans, and religious groups. The issue of organ harvesting of Falun Gong prisoners of conscience was also prominently raised, the first time it has been placed on the human rights agenda by Congress before the visit of a Chinese leader. <\/p>\n
U.S. Representative Chris Smith, the Chairman of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, said in his opening statement to a session on Sept. 18 that Xi Jinping is visiting the U.S. at a period where the communist regime \u201cis staging an extraordinary assault on the rule of law, human rights, and civil society.\u201d Smith earlier cited as the examples the July arrest of Wang Yu, a noted rights lawyer who defended Uyghur dissident Ilham Tohti and many others. <\/p>\n
\u201cUnder Xi\u2019s leadership, the Chinese government has pushed through new laws and draft legislation that would legitimize political, religious, and ethnic repression, further curtail civil liberties, and expand censorship of the Internet,\u201d Rep. Smith continued. <\/p>\n
Present to give their statements and answer questions on the state of human rights in China were six witnesses: Teng Biao, a Chinese human rights lawyer and visiting scholar at Harvard University Law School; Xiao Qiang, the founder of Chinese online news outlet China Digital Times; Yang Jianli, a leading Chinese democracy advocate; Chinese dissident Wei Jingsheng, who has been dubbed the \u201cFather of Chinese democracy\u201d; Shoret Hoshur, an Uyghur journalist with Radio Free Asia; and Ethan Gutmann, an American investigative journalist and author of \u201cThe Slaughter,\u201d a book about the Chinese regime\u2019s practice of harvesting organs from prisoners of conscience.<\/p>\n
The speakers almost unanimously urged U.S. president Barack Obama to take a tough stance with Xi Jinping during their upcoming meeting. <\/p>\n
\u201cI suggest that when President Obama meets with Chairman Xi Jinping, he should make restoring the rule of law, abiding by the law, abolishing all forms of illegal detention and torture one of the main themes of their negotiations, rather than perfunctory generalities of human rights,\u201d said Wei Jingsheng, speaking in Chinese. \u201cWhen Xi Jinping visits the US Congress, lawmakers should also apply pressure to Xi Jinping on this issue, in order to promote human rights in China, as well as to protect hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens in China, and their rights and interests.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
