Lesser\/European Pressphoto Agency<br \/>3:52 pm ET<br \/>Sep 25, 2015<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/despite-climate-progress-u-s-china-face-a-world-of-differences-1443179937\" style=\"color: rgb(17, 91, 143); outline: none; font-weight: bold;\">As President&nbsp;<strong>Xi Jinping<\/strong>&nbsp;and President&nbsp;<strong>Barack Obama<\/strong>&nbsp;gave a joint press conference in the Rose Garden,&nbsp;<\/a>roars from hundreds of people gathered outside in both support and protest of Mr. Xi could be heard over the television broadcast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">Yellow police tape separated supporters of Mr.&nbsp;Xi and detractors who called on Mr.&nbsp;Obama to raise human rights concerns with the Chinese leader.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">The supporters, who made up about half of those assembled, wore red shirts with a bald eagle and a panda holding up peace signs that read&nbsp;\u201cChina, USA partner to win-win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">The protesters mostly represented two groups, one seeking Tibet\u2019s independent from China and another speaking out against the Chinese state\u2019s&nbsp;treatment of the&nbsp;<strong>Uighur ethnic group<\/strong>&nbsp;in Northwestern China.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">The latter&nbsp;<strong>contingent<\/strong>&nbsp;waved light blue flags with a white star and crescent in support of the predominantly Muslim region in China called Xinjiang but known to Uighurs as East Turkestan. Chants of \u201cshame on you Xi Jinping\u201d and \u201cstop lying to the world\u201d could be heard over loudspeakers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">Rebiya Kadeer, a six-year political prisoner in China who was released to the U.S. in 2005, said many of those assembled with her group were people who had fled Xinjiang.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">\u201cWe are here to protest human rights abuse in China,\u201d Ms. Kadeer said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">Pema Yoko, executive director of students for a Free Tibet, said she hoped Mr.&nbsp;Obama would encourage Mr. Xi to improve human rights in Tibet, where she said people are not free to speak out against China\u2019s rule. She was surrounded by people holding banners calling for a Free Tibet and a couple of people wearing white dragon masks and posing for pictures with other protesters and passersby.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">\u201cThere are no human rights, there are no freedoms in Tibet,\u201d Ms. Yoko said. \u201cUnder Xi Jinping\u2019s leadership the human rights situation has gone from bad to worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">Kevin Zhang, a business student at Johns Hopkins University, was clad in one of the red shirts promoting U.S.-China ties. Holding&nbsp;mini Chinese and American flags in one hand, he&nbsp;said he came with other students from the area to welcome Mr. Xi to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">\u201cIn China it\u2019s a big deal to see the president,\u201d Mr. Zhang said. \u201cIt\u2019s not like America, it\u2019s almost like monarchy, like seeing the emperor.
