Fellow correspondents register \u2018deep concern\u2019 about treatment of reporter<\/p>\n

A French journalist working in China<\/a> has been subject to intimidation after writing about the Beijing government\u2019s reaction to the Paris attacks.<\/p>\n

Now the Foreign Correspondents\u2019 Club of China <\/a>(FCCC) has issued a statement registering its \u201cdeep concern\u201d about the treatment of Ursula Gauthier, who works for the Paris-based weekly, L\u2019Obs (formerly Le Nouvel Observateur).<\/p>\n

Her article about terrorism<\/a> touched on one of China\u2019s most sensitive issues: the conflict with the Muslim Uighur people in the northwestern region of Xinjiang.<\/p>\n

Following its publication on 18 November, Gauthier was the subject of inflammatory editorials in the state-controlled Global Times and China Daily, plus several websites linked to the Chinse military.<\/p>\n

Websites carried thousands of aggressive comments about Gauthier (including death threats) which also published her photograph and her address.<\/p>\n

She was also summoned to the foreign ministry where officials unsuccessfully, sought an admission that her article had been wrong.<\/p>\n

The FCCC\u2019s statement said: \u201cReceiving criticism is a normal and necessary part of journalistic work, but this is neither proportionate nor reasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n

The FCCC is also concerned that Gauthier yet to be issued with a new press card, regarding further delay in receiving accreditation as \u201canother serious attempt at intimidation.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
