Current reforms aim to produce a more transparent and professional justice system,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">\u201cBut as President Xi said during the joint press conference with prime minister [David] Cameron in October, \u2018there is always room for improvement\u2019, and the UK will continue to work closely with&nbsp;<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/china\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 86, 137); cursor: pointer; border-bottom-width: 0.0625rem; border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-color: rgb(220, 220, 220); transition: border-color 0.15s ease-out; background: transparent;\">China<\/a>&nbsp;to this end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">The British pronouncement stood in stark contrast to criticism that the US, Germany and Canada levelled at Beijing this week over its human rights record.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">Canada\u2019s ambassador in Beijing, Guy Saint-Jacques, said he had \u201cwitnessed a worrisome increase in the number of&nbsp;<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-rights-idUSKBN0TT0EU20151210\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 86, 137); cursor: pointer; border-bottom-width: 0.0625rem; border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-color: rgb(220, 220, 220); transition: border-color 0.15s ease-out; background: transparent;\">Chinese citizens jailed<\/a>&nbsp;merely for peacefully expressing their views, as well as attempts to silence critics outside of China\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">Meanwhile, the US ambassador to Beijing, Max Baucus, accused Beijing of treating peaceful activists and human rights lawyers as \u201cenemies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\"><a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/beijing.usembassy-china.org.cn\/human-rights-day--statement-2015.html\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 86, 137); cursor: pointer; border-bottom-width: 0.0625rem; border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-color: rgb(220, 220, 220); transition: border-color 0.15s ease-out; background: transparent;\">In a statement marking Human Rights Day<\/a>, he said: \u201cWe remain concerned over the crackdown on human rights lawyers and others who seek peacefully to contribute their views to the public discourse on the future of China. In some cases, these Chinese citizens have been detained in secret locations without access to their families or their lawyers. This is deeply troubling and calls into question China\u2019s commitment to the rule of law.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">\u201cWhen I saw this statement, I felt like I was reading the Global Times,\u201d he said, referring to the Communist party-controlled tabloid whose raison d\u2019\u00eatre is to heap praise on Beijing. \u201cThis is appalling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">Britain was \u201ctrading its principles\u201d to boost economic ties with Beijing and ignoring those whose rights were being \u201ctrampled under foot\u201d by Xi\u2019s government, Hu claimed. \u201cI cannot hide my disappointment with the British government\u2019s statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">Sophie Richardson, the China director for Human Rights Watch, said: \u201cApparently the UK has achieved both austerity and clarity on its human rights policy towards China by simply allowing the latter to pen the UK\u2019s human rights day statements.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51);
