{"id":2324,"date":"2015-12-26T15:11:44","date_gmt":"2015-12-26T15:11:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iuhrdf.org\/en\/2015\/12\/26\/china-expels-french-journalist-who-questioned-treatment-uighurs\/"},"modified":"2015-12-26T15:11:44","modified_gmt":"2015-12-26T15:11:44","slug":"china-expels-french-journalist-who-questioned-treatment-uighurs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/china-expels-french-journalist-who-questioned-treatment-uighurs\/","title":{"rendered":"China expels French journalist who questioned treatment of Uighurs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ursula Gauthier, from L\u2019Obs magazine, was attacked in state media for article criticising Beijing government\u2019s approach to Muslim minority in Xinjiang<\/p>\n<p>Saturday 26 December 2015 01.57 EST<\/p>\n<p>China is expelling a French journalist who questioned its treatment of its Muslim Uighur minority in the north-western region of Xinjiang, her employer, the weekly l&rsquo;Obs news magazine, has said.<\/p>\n<p>Ursula Gauthier, the magazine&rsquo;s Beijing correspondent, needs to leave China by 31 December after authorities refused to renew her visa.<\/p>\n<p><video width=\"600\" controls><source src=\"http:\/\/docs.uyghuramerican.org\/videos\/China expels French journalist who questioned treatment of U.mp4\" type=\"video\/mp4\"><\/video><\/p>\n<p>Shortly after publishing a story that suggested China was using the&nbsp;<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ng-interactive\/2015\/nov\/14\/paris-attacks-what-we-know-so-far\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 86, 137); cursor: pointer; border-bottom-width: 0.0625rem; border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-color: rgb(220, 220, 220); transition: border-color 0.15s ease-out; text-decoration: none !important; background: transparent;\">Paris attacks<\/a>to justify crackdowns on Uighur people, Gauthier was the subject of editorials in state-controlled media and even death threats, L&rsquo;Obs said.<\/p>\n<p>Several media reported that the Chinese ministry of foreign affairs had asked her to publicly withdraw her report.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;Obs, which changed its name from Le Nouvel Observateur in October 2014, stood by its correspondent.<\/p>\n<p>It wrote in an editorial that her eviction represented a &ldquo;major incident&rdquo; at a time when&nbsp;<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/france\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 86, 137); cursor: pointer; border-bottom-width: 0.0625rem; border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-color: rgb(220, 220, 220); transition: border-color 0.15s ease-out; text-decoration: none !important; background: transparent;\">France<\/a>&nbsp;and China were strengthening their economic, cultural and diplomatic ties.<\/p>\n<p>The French foreign ministry on Friday issued a terse statement in which it regretted that her visa was not renewed.
