The answer is Chinese president Xi Jinping, according to, apparently, the people of Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">This week, Chinese state media has&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.21cn.com\/hot\/focus\/a\/2016\/0303\/07\/30701443.shtml\" style=\"color: rgb(7, 130, 193);\">widely reported<\/a>&nbsp;that Xi was declared the \u201cstatesman of the year\u201d for 2015, by the the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/epaper.pakobserver.net\/201602\/19\/index.php\" style=\"color: rgb(7, 130, 193);\">Pakistan Observer<\/a>, a popular English-language newspaper. The newspaper sang Xi\u2019s praises in a 100-page, full color report, which explains on its front cover that Xi is the \u201cGeneral Secretary, Communist Party; President, People\u2019s Republic of China; Chairman, Central Military Commission\u2026and much more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">The result was based on a nationwide survey, with<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytimes.com.pk\/national\/19-Feb-2016\/pakistanis-vote-chinese-president-statesman-of-the-year\" style=\"color: rgb(7, 130, 193);\">&nbsp;84% of respondents<\/a>&nbsp;voting for Xi, whom the report described as the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/epaper.pakobserver.net\/201602\/18\/\" style=\"color: rgb(7, 130, 193);\">world\u2019s most powerful leader<\/a>.\u201d (The full text of the report is not available online.) It is unclear who the other candidates were. Xi is \u201cone of the towering leaders in the 5000 years old history of China,\u201d Pakistan Observer editor-in-chief&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/pakobserver.net\/2016\/02\/19\/president-xi-is-worlds-most-powerful-and-most-towering-leader-of-china-zahid-malik\/\" style=\"color: rgb(7, 130, 193);\">Zahid Malik said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">\u201cPresident Xi is an outstanding statesman with foresight and sagacity,\u201d said former Pakistani prime minister Shaukat Aziz&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/english.cntv.cn\/2016\/02\/24\/ARTIxfXBQlUAETvwuP55BIc9160224.shtml\" style=\"color: rgb(7, 130, 193);\">at a press event<\/a>&nbsp;for the report. \u201cHe brings new concepts and ideas for the development of China and the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">Xi\u2019s popularity in Pakistan is perhaps unsurprising given the significant cooperation between the two nations. Pakistan is&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/qz.com\/621884\/china-is-the-worlds-fastest-growing-arms-exporter-thanks-to-the-nations-surrounding-india\/\" style=\"color: rgb(7, 130, 193);\">the biggest buyer<\/a>&nbsp;of China\u2019s arms exports, thanks to their common rival India. And China plays a dominant role in Pakistan\u2019s economy. Last year Xi<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/04\/20\/world\/asia\/chinas-president-heads-to-pakistan-with-billions-in-infrastructure-aid.html\" style=\"color: rgb(7, 130, 193);\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed a $46 billion deal<\/a>&nbsp;in Islamabad to pave the way for Chinese companies to build much-needed infrastructure in the nation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">That includes development along the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/thediplomat.com\/tag\/china-pakistan-economic-corridor\/\" style=\"color: rgb(7, 130, 193);\">China-Pakistan Economic Corridor<\/a>, which connects Pakistan\u2019s Gwadar port to China\u2019s far-west Xinjiang region and fits nicely into Xi\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/qz.com\/415649\/china-is-building-the-most-extensive-global-commercial-military-empire-in-history\/\" style=\"color: rgb(7, 130, 193);\">One Belt, One Road<\/a>\u201d program\u2014a land-and-sea version of the fabled Silk Road trading route.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: sans-serif, Arial, Verdana, 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.8px;\">The close ties between the two nations prompted a Pakistani province to launch Mandarin courses in its schools about five years ago. The first attempts&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/qz.com\/416338\/how-pakistan-tried-to-teach-its-children-mandarin-and-failed\/\" style=\"color: rgb(7, 130, 193);\">appear to have failed<\/a>&nbsp;for unspecified technical reasons, but the province is determined to keep trying.
