UHRP also commends the Martin Ennals Foundation for distinguishing the work of the other 2016 finalists Syrian human rights lawyer<a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinennalsaward.org\/?hrd=razan-zaitouneh-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Razan Zaitouneh<\/a> and the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinennalsaward.org\/?hrd=zone-9-bloggers-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Zone 9 Bloggers<\/a> from Ethiopia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recognition of Ilham Tohti\u2019s peaceful advocacy for Uyghur human rights sends an unequivocal message to China that he should be released immediately and unconditionally. The harassment of Ilham Tohti, his family and students was intended to intimidate him into silence for speaking out against the daily discrimination and long-term assimilation experienced by Uyghurs,\u201d said UHRP Director Alim Seytoff in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Seytoff added: \u201cThe award of the 2016 Martin Ennals Award to Ilham Tohti should energize the international community to step up its efforts on his behalf. His trial and sentencing were an injustice and given the lack of human rights protections in China it is vital concerned government and multilateral officials work towards Ilham Tohti\u2019s release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On October 11, 2016, the Martin Ennals Foundation, a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinennalsaward.org\/?page_id=70\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> collective<\/a> of the world\u2019s ten leading human rights organizations,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinennalsaward.org\/?p=1078\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> announced<\/a> its annual award to Ilham Tohti.&nbsp; A video of the award ceremony is available<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ustream.tv\/channel\/ueCvkmTf59u\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ilham Tohti, who worked as a professor at Beijing\u2019s Minzu University, often questioned the efficacy of Chinese government policies targeting Uyghurs citing worsening economic, social and cultural conditions. He founded the Uighurbiz website in order to \u201cpromote mutual understanding as well as dialogue among ethnic communities,\u201d as he explained in an <a href=\"http:\/\/chinachange.org\/2014\/04\/06\/my-ideals-and-the-career-path-i-have-chosen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autobiographical essay<\/a> in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Ilham Tohti was found guilty on charges of separatism and sentenced to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/09\/24\/world\/asia\/china-court-sentences-uighur-scholar-to-life-in-separatism-case.html?_r=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">life imprisonment<\/a> on September 23, 2014 after a two-day trial that began on September 17. A November 21, 2014 appeal hearing was held <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/uyghur\/appeal-11192014103341.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">behind closed doors<\/a> at the Urumchi Number 1 Detention Center. The appeal was turned down.<\/p>\n<p>At the sixty-ninth session of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention held between April 22 and May 1, 2014, a panel of five human rights experts rendered the opinion that Ilham Tohti\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/uhrp.org\/press-release\/un-working-group-says-chinas-deprivation-uyghur-scholar-ilham-tohtis-liberty-arbitrary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deprivation of liberty since January 15, 2014 is arbitrary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Seven of Ilham Tohti\u2019s students were given <a href=\"http:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/2014\/12\/09\/uk-china-rights-xinjiang-idUKKBN0JN0B020141209\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prison sentences of up to eight years<\/a> in December 2014.
