{"id":3320,"date":"2017-01-13T00:39:27","date_gmt":"2017-01-13T00:39:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iuhrdf.org\/en\/2017\/01\/13\/xinjiang-town-orders-residents-engrave-names-and-id-numbers-all-knives-including-kitchen\/"},"modified":"2017-01-13T00:39:27","modified_gmt":"2017-01-13T00:39:27","slug":"xinjiang-town-orders-residents-engrave-names-and-id-numbers-all-knives-including-kitchen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/xinjiang-town-orders-residents-engrave-names-and-id-numbers-all-knives-including-kitchen\/","title":{"rendered":"Xinjiang town orders residents to engrave names and ID numbers on to all knives, including kitchen tools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A town in the restive region of Xinjiang has ordered that citizens engrave their ID numbers on all knives.<\/p>\n<p>Catherine Lai<br \/>12 January 2017 13:01<\/p>\n<p>A town in the restive region of Xinjiang has ordered that citizens engrave their ID numbers on all knives.<\/p>\n<p>According to a photo of the&nbsp;bulletin&nbsp;circulating online, authorities in Wensu&nbsp;town&nbsp;in the Aksu region of Xinjiang, issued a notice on January 8, ordering citizens&nbsp;in the jurisdiction to bring their knives in to be engraved with their owners\u2019 names and ID numbers.<\/p>\n<p>The order applies to&nbsp;\u201cvegetable knives, fruit knives, butchers\u2019 knives, those used for sewing, swords and knives for martial arts, axes, sickles, and all&nbsp;tools with blades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot one household or blade can be missed,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>The notice urged all residents and businesses to bring their tools to one of two designated locations to be engraved between January 8 to 10. They must bring their IDs and pay three RMB per knife.<\/p>\n<p>Tools that are not engraved by January 10 will be confiscated in inspections conducted by the community and the police station, and their owners will be held responsible, the notice added.<\/p>\n<p>It said that the order was issued to \u201cstrengthen the management of tools\u2026 and ensure that none slip through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A staff member of the neighbourhood organisation&nbsp;that issued the circulated the notice and a staff member at the county government&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rfa.org\/mandarin\/yataibaodao\/shaoshuminzu\/xl2-01112017102645.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;US-backed Radio Free Asia separately that the notice was issued by the Political and Legal Affairs Commission, an organ of the communist party which oversees law enforcement agencies. The county-level Political and Legal Affairs Commission&nbsp;declined to comment when contacted by RFA.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/docs.uyghuramerican.org\/images\/C1xuwSDNhWIAAtdwy.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/p>\n<p><em>A photo of the notice circulated online.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Terrorist\u2019 crackdown<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The autonomous region has seen a series of violent attacks in recent years. Chinese authorities have launched a crackdown on separatist \u201cterrorists\u201d it says are behind the violence. On Monday, the chairman of the region said the region will continue to tighten security in border areas to prevent terrorists from entering or leaving the region. On Sunday, three suspected terrorists were shot dead in Hotan prefecture while resisting arrest, according to the regional government.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Ministry of Public Security, two people were killed and three were injured at a Communist Party building in the Moyu County on December 28, 2016, after attackers with knives detonated an explosive device.<\/p>\n<p>In November, the region saw&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkongfp.com\/2016\/11\/25\/china-confiscates-passports-xinjiang-residents-report\/\">tightened controls on citizens\u2019 passports<\/a>.
