Staff reporter<br \/>\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200bWed, Feb 15, 2017 &#8211; Page 3\u3000<\/p>\n<p>World Uyghur Congress president Rebiya Kadeer has canceled plans to visit Taiwan due to the intervention of \u201cspecific individuals,\u201d the Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Kadeer told TSU Chairman Liu I-te (\u5289\u4e00\u5fb7), when they met in Tokyo on Monday to discuss the planned visit, that \u201cit is not the optimal time to visit Taiwan\u201d and she should not undertake the visit \u201cuntil further consideration,\u201d the TSU said.<\/p>\n<p>Kadeer\u2019s decision was based on concern about potential political repercussions in Taiwan of such a visit, but she still expressed willingness to visit, the TSU said.<\/p>\n<p>Kadeer last month released a video announcing that she had accepted the TSU\u2019s invitation to visit and she reiterated her willingness to visit at a meeting with leaders of Japan-based and Taiwan-based Uighur associations in Tokyo on Saturday last week.<\/p>\n<p>The TSU members were told that, just prior to their meeting with Kadeer on Monday, some \u201cspecific individuals\u201d had met with Kadeer and dissuaded her from visiting Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>The TSU did not reveal the identity of the individuals or their affiliation, but the party criticized them, saying they prevented a world-renowned human rights advocate from visiting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaying that it is not the best timing for Kadeer to visit Taiwan is simply absurd,\u201d Liu said.<\/p>\n<p>With the election of President Tsai Ing-wen (\u8521\u82f1\u6587), the growing public aversion to Chinese aggression and US President Donald Trump\u2019s approach with China, \u201cit is the best time for Kadeer to visit Taiwan,\u201d Liu said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaiwan should not limit itself out of fear of China\u2019s ire,\u201d Liu said. \u201cTsai should counter Chinese pressure with fearless determination and concrete action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The party spent two months organizing Kadeer\u2019s trip \u2014 which was to begin at the end of next month \u2014 and was ready to help gain government approval for a visa for her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be the pride of Taiwanese to have Kadeer, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, to visit Taiwan, while the Chinese Communist Party would be most delighted to see the cancelation,\u201d TSU Department of Organization director Chang Chao-lin (\u5f35\u5146\u6797) said.<\/p>\n<p>The TSU said it understood Kadeer\u2019s decision and would continue its efforts to invite her and others campaigning against Chinese aggression to Taiwan to make the nation a basis of resistance against China.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>World Uyghur Congress president Rebiya Kadeer has canceled plans to visit Taiwan due to the intervention of \u201cspecific individuals,\u201d the Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) said yesterday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":3394,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"topic":[],"class_list":["post-3395","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3395","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3395"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3395\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/3394"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3395"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3395"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3395"},{"taxonomy":"topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/topic?post=3395"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
