The Communist Party boss of one of China\u2019s major Muslim regions has cited US President Donald Trump\u2019s immigration policies in stressing the need to combat religious extremism.<\/p>\n
Li Jianhua, the party secretary of Ningxia, said on Tuesday that some radicals had turned religious belief, such as Islam, into extremists ideology, causing instability in the world.<\/p>\n
Last month, a video purportedly issued by Islamic State showed Uygur-speaking fighters vowing to launch attacks in Xinjiang and \u201cshed blood like rivers\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe jihad, violence and terror demanded by the extremists has resulted in Trump\u2019s Muslim ban,\u201d Li told reporters on the sidelines of the National People\u2019s Congress session in Beijing.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo matter what the purpose of this order is, he intended to prevent extremism from infiltrating into the US mainland.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump on Monday issued a revised travel ban blocking entry to the US of six Muslim-majority countries. His administration has previously insisted the restrictions were aimed at Islamic militants and not Muslims.<\/p>\n
Northwestern Ningxia is home to 2.4 million members of the Hui ethnic minority, a Chinese-speaking Muslim group, accounting for just over a third of the region\u2019s total population, with Han Chinese the majority.<\/p>\n
Li said China was promoting the Sinicization of religions that originated overseas in a \u201ctolerant and inclusive\u201d manner.<\/p>\n
The nation should extract elements from the Koran that were compatible with Chinese culture, such as peace and harmony, he said.<\/p>\n
Li said that in China \u201cfreedom of religion does not equal extremism\u201d.<\/p>\n
Guo Chengzhen, vice-chairman of the China Islam Association, told reporters Trump\u2019s travel ban reflected the rise of populism globally.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is against the stability and unity of the international community,\u201d Guo said. \u201cOur country has always stood for the equality of all religions and ethnicities.\u201d<\/p>\n
