{"id":3530,"date":"2017-03-21T22:44:38","date_gmt":"2017-03-21T22:44:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iuhrdf.org\/en\/2017\/03\/21\/uighurs-applications-under-review\/"},"modified":"2017-03-21T22:44:38","modified_gmt":"2017-03-21T22:44:38","slug":"uighurs-applications-under-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/uighurs-applications-under-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Uighurs: applications under review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Applications made by three out of the four Uighurs living in Bermuda for naturalisation are being reviewed by the British Government, MPs heard yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Simon Jones<br \/>Published Mar 21, 2017 at 8:00 am (Updated Mar 21, 2017 at 6:48 am)<\/p>\n<p>Applications made by three out of the four Uighurs living in Bermuda for naturalisation are being reviewed by the British Government, MPs heard yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia Gordon-Pamplin, the Minister for Home Affairs, provided the update in response to questions from Progressive Labour Party MPs during the budget debate of her ministry\u2019s spending.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UK Government is currently reviewing the naturalisation applications of three of the four Uighurs,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that is granted they can then obtain passports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a very positive development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walton Brown, the Shadow Minister for Home Affairs, asked Ms Gordon-Pamplin what had changed to allow the UK to state publicly that they were reviewing the applications.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Gordon-Pamplin responded: \u201cThe response I have been given is that they have been on island over five years with indefinite permission to stay so they are eligible to apply under the British Nationality Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said she did not know why only three of the four Uighurs\u2019 applications were being reviewed.<\/p>\n<p>The four Uighurs, Abdullah Abdulqadir, Khalil Mamut, Ablikim Turahun and Salahidin Abdulahad, who are originally from Chinese Turkestan, were secretly brought to Bermuda from Guant\u00e1namo Bay, Cuba, in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>They have remained stranded and stateless in Bermuda ever since then and unable to leave the island.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Applications made by three out of the four Uighurs living in Bermuda for naturalisation are being reviewed by the British Government, MPs heard yesterday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":3529,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"topic":[],"class_list":["post-3530","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3530","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3530"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3530\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/3529"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3530"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3530"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3530"},{"taxonomy":"topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/topic?post=3530"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
