{"id":3709,"date":"2017-05-10T19:47:48","date_gmt":"2017-05-10T19:47:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iuhrdf.org\/en\/2017\/05\/10\/xinjiang-woman-detained-sharing-praise-allah-social-media-reports\/"},"modified":"2017-05-10T19:47:48","modified_gmt":"2017-05-10T19:47:48","slug":"xinjiang-woman-detained-sharing-praise-allah-social-media-reports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/xinjiang-woman-detained-sharing-praise-allah-social-media-reports\/","title":{"rendered":"Xinjiang woman detained for sharing praise for Allah on social media \u2013 reports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New reports of repression against Muslim Uyghurs in China\u2019s northwestern province of Xinjiang have emerged, as a woman was apparently detained for sharing praise for Allah on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Elson Tong<br \/>10 May 2017 12:58<\/p>\n<p>New reports of repression against Muslim Uyghurs in China\u2019s northwestern province of Xinjiang have emerged, as a woman was&nbsp;apparently&nbsp;detained for sharing praise for Allah on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Exile group the World Uyghur Congress also told Taiwanese media that mosques in the Muslim-majority Hotan prefecture in Xinjiang have been ordered to replace a section of Friday&nbsp;prayers with the line \u201cwe give thanks&nbsp;to Chairman Xi [Jinping].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The latest reports come after the restive region\u2019s top legislative body&nbsp;announced a list of 50&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkongfp.com\/2017\/03\/31\/china-bans-beards-burkas-muslim-region-part-anti-extremist-crackdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201canti-extremism\u201d regulations<\/a>&nbsp;in late March.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Praise of Allah<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, police in the central Xinjiang city of Korla announced on their WeChat account that a woman had been detained for uploading a large amount of extremist religious content \u2013 in words and graphics \u2013 to the QQ social media platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter questioning, the suspect admitted to the truth of uploading&nbsp;extremist religious words and graphics&nbsp;to the QQ space,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>US-backed Radio Free Asia&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rfa.org\/mandarin\/yataibaodao\/shehui\/xl2-05092017103744.html?utm_content=bufferc38ff&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cited<\/a>&nbsp;a Korla police officer as saying that the woman was&nbsp;detained because she uploaded a&nbsp;graphic containing praise for Allah.<\/p>\n<p>The officer confirmed to RFA that&nbsp;sharing passages from the Quran and graphics praising Allah was banned.<\/p>\n<p>The outlet also cited a receptionist at Korla\u2019s Cyberspace Affairs Office \u2013 the government internet regulator \u2013 as saying: \u201cThe Quran is quite separatist \u2013 there is a corresponding punishment for [sharing] it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The receptionist declined to disclose the exact words and graphics that constituted \u201cextremism\u201d or \u201cterrorism,\u201d however, citing government confidentiality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Changes to prayers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also on Tuesday, the World Uyghur Congress&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cna.com.tw\/news\/acn\/201705090280-1.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;Taiwan\u2019s Central News Agency that the local government in Hotan had begun enforcing changes to lines recited during weekly prayers on Friday \u2013 Islam\u2019s holy day of the week.<\/p>\n<p>According to photographs of documents provided by the group, the call to prayer across the prefecture was changed to: \u201cWe are the children of the motherland. The motherland is great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Tasbih \u2013 a repeatedly uttered section of prayers such as \u201cAllah is great\u201d \u2013 has been changed to: \u201cWe give thanks to China.
