{"id":3806,"date":"2017-07-06T02:15:31","date_gmt":"2017-07-06T02:15:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iuhrdf.org\/en\/2017\/07\/06\/china-uscirf-condemns-ramadan-restrictions-xinjiang-uighur-autonomous-region\/"},"modified":"2017-07-06T02:15:31","modified_gmt":"2017-07-06T02:15:31","slug":"china-uscirf-condemns-ramadan-restrictions-xinjiang-uighur-autonomous-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iuhrdf.org\/en\/china-uscirf-condemns-ramadan-restrictions-xinjiang-uighur-autonomous-region\/","title":{"rendered":"CHINA: USCIRF Condemns Ramadan Restrictions in Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">By&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscirf.gov\/news-room\/press-releases\/china-uscirf-condemns-ramadan-restrictions-in-xinjiang-uighur-autonomous\">United States Commission on International Religious Freedom<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe Chinese government has taken unprecedented steps to trample on the religious freedom of Uighur Muslims\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2013 Muslims around the world recently marked the end of the holy month of Ramadan. &nbsp;The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) strongly condemns the Chinese government\u2019s restrictions on Uighur Muslims\u2019 religious practice during Ramadan in the autonomous region of Xinjiang.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe Chinese government has taken unprecedented steps to trample on the religious freedom of Uighur Muslims particularly during Ramadan,\u201d said USCIRF Chairman Daniel Mark. \u201cChinese Communist Party officials were assigned to live in the homes of Uighur families in Xinjiang to prevent them from fasting and praying. This new level of control is yet another example of the Chinese government\u2019s unacceptable repression of Uighur Muslims. &nbsp;We call on Beijing to abide by its international human rights commitments and cease its harassment of religious communities.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Chinese government continues to suppress Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang, often under the guise of countering what it alleges to be religious and other violent extremism. Other recent alarming developments include: new regulations prohibiting face-covering veils and beards; a ban on \u201cextreme\u201d Islamic baby names; and the confiscation of Uighur Muslims\u2019 passports and Qur\u2019ans.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Uighur Muslims also continue to receive unfair trails and are harshly treated in prison. USCIRF Vice Chair, Sandra Jolley, is advocating on behalf of Uighur Muslim Gulmira Imin, as part of USCIRF\u2019s Religious Prisoners of Conscience Project. Ms. Imin, a website administrator and Uighur advocate, was sentenced in May 2010 to life imprisonment on charges of splittism (undermining the unity of the state), organizing an illegal demonstration, and leaking state secrets.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cEight years ago today, July 5, 2009, Uighurs gathered in Urumqi to peacefully protest the Chinese government\u2019s treatment of their people. &nbsp;The protests were met with police violence and a number of arrests and deaths occurred. &nbsp;Gulmira Imin was arrested in connection with these riots and her harsh sentence is yet another example of the government\u2019s persistent targeting of Uighur Muslims,\u201d said Vice Chair Jolley. \u201cThe Chinese government should immediately release Gulmira Imin, prominent Uighur scholar Ilham Tohti, and all other prisoners of conscience.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MVmsnN_Rm7o\">Click here to see Vice Chair Jolley\u2019s statement in support of Gulmira Imin.<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">USCIRF again recommended in 2017 that China be designated as a \u201ccountry of particular concern,\u201d or CPC, for systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom. The State Department has designated China as a CPC since 1999, most recently in 2016.
