He also said that&nbsp;<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;\">Turkey will censor \u2014 or, in his words, \u201celiminate\u201d \u2014 any \u201cmedia reports targeting China.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 20px; color: rgb(38, 53, 75); font-family: proxima-nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:times new roman,times,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;\">Who would target China from Turkey?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; color: rgb(38, 53, 75); font-family: proxima-nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\n<li style=\"box-sizing: border-box; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:times new roman,times,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\">In a word, Uyghurs. It\u2019s estimated that hundreds, or even thousands, of the&nbsp;<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;\">Turkic-language-speaking and largely Muslim Uyghurs<\/span>&nbsp;of China\u2019s western province Xinjiang have made their way to Turkey. Turkey has long&nbsp;<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;\">angered China<\/span>&nbsp;by sheltering this population, and Erdogan himself had even in 2009 accused China of committing \u201cgenocide\u201d toward its Uyghur population,&nbsp;<em style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">Bloomberg<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-08-03\/turkey-and-china-pledge-close-security-cooperation\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; background-color: transparent; color: rgb(237, 71, 71);\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">points out<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"box-sizing: border-box; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:times new roman,times,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\">Beijing is concerned that some may have joined Islamist militants in the Middle East, though concrete numbers for this are even more difficult to obtain than for the Uyghur population in Turkey. background-color: transparent; color: rgb(237, 71, 71);\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Belt and Road<\/a>&nbsp;<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;\">infrastructure<\/span>&nbsp;initiative that aims to link the East with Europe.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"box-sizing: border-box; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:times new roman,times,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><em style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">Bloomberg<\/em>&nbsp;highlights the larger strategic context: \u201cChina, Russia and Turkey have strengthened their partnership while&nbsp;<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;\">Erdogan has pulled away from the orbit of European governments<\/span>&nbsp;amid disputes over human rights and other issues.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 20px; color: rgb(38, 53, 75); font-family: proxima-nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:times new roman,times,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\">Turkey is not the only country that China has recently convinced to crack down on its Uyghur population.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; color: rgb(38, 53, 75); font-family: proxima-nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\n<li style=\"box-sizing: border-box; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:times new roman,times,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\">A month ago,&nbsp;<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;\">Egypt detained and deported over a dozen Uyghur students<\/span>, in a move that \u201cseemed to be in support of the Chinese government\u2019s deepening effort to stifle resistance\u201d from Uyghurs within China, the&nbsp;<em style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">New York Times&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/07\/06\/world\/asia\/egypt-muslims-uighurs-deportations-xinjiang-china.html?_r=0\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; background-color: transparent; color: rgb(237, 71, 71);\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;(paywall).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"box-sizing: border-box; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:times new roman,times,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\">Just last week,&nbsp;<em style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">Reuters<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-italy-xinjiang-idUSKBN1AD16Z\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box;
