But by early this year, reports were starting to surface detailing Beijing&#8217;s increasing repression of the Uighurs and other Muslim groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: Georgia; font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.7; background-color: rgb(252, 252, 252);\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">Chinese officials have banned Islamic rituals, such as fasting during Ramadan, and established what they called &#8220;re-education&#8221; camps to force Uighurs to give up Islamic practices in the country&#8217;s Xinjiang region.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 20px; font-family: Georgia; font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.7; background-color: rgb(252, 252, 252);\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">&#8220;Things were good, he was enjoying his job,&#8221; his brother Abdul Mijit told Al Jazeera.
