One in five arrests in China last year took place in Xinjiang, the nominally autonomous western territory that critics say has been turned into a police state<\/a> rife with human rights violations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Analysing publicly available government data, the advocacy group Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD), found 21% of all arrests in China in 2017 were in Xinjiang, which accounts for about 1.5% of China\u2019s population. Indictments in <\/span>Xinjiang<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> accounted for 13% of all charges handed down in the country last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor both arrests and indictments, the sudden increases in 2017 from 2016 are staggering,\u201d the <\/span>organisation<\/span> said in its report<\/a>, released jointly with a Chinese group, the Equal Rights Initiative, on Wednesday. \u201cGiven that China\u2019s conviction rate is 99.9%, nearly every individual indicted is likely to be convicted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
