China<\/a> has denied claims made during a UN panel last week that authorities are suppressing the rights of Muslim minorities in the west of the country in the name of fighting terrorism.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Chinese delegation told a UN human rights panel on Monday that China had launched a \u201cspecial campaign\u201d to crack down on \u201cextremist and terrorist crimes\u201d, but no specific ethnic or religious groups were being targeted.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Friday, a UN human rights panel said it had received credible reports that as many as 1 million ethnic Uighurs in Xinjiang<\/a> were being held in indoctrination or \u201cre-education\u201d camps, where they can be kept indefinitely, without due process.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hu Lianhe from China\u2019s united front work department \u2013 an agency under the Communist party that focuses on China\u2019s influence abroad \u2013 told the panel: \u201cThere is no such thing as re-education centres in Xinjiang.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n
