At the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Canada has challenged China on their treatment of the Muslim Uighur population and emphasised the importance of addressing human rights. It comes only few days after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo similarly criticised China for their repression of the Uyghur\u2019s. Up to one million Uyghur\u2019s have been detained in <\/span>internment camps<\/span><\/a> by China.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

New York: Canada has called out China for its human right abuses, notably of the Muslim Uighurs, officials said Tuesday [25 September 2018].<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery single time I sit down with any world leader, but particularly ones where there are human rights concerns, I bring up human rights,\u201d Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.<\/p>\n

Up to one million Uighurs and other Muslim minorities have been detained in internment camps in China\u2019s far western Xinjiang region, according to estimates cited by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said she met on Monday [24 September 2018] with her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, \u201cand I did raise the issue of the Uighurs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe who live in freedom do have an obligation to stand up for people who don\u2019t,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Beijing has disputed the findings of the UN report, saying the actions were necessary to combat extremism and terrorism on the country\u2019s western frontier, on the border with Pakistan.<\/p>\n

Authorities in China have long denied the existence of internment camps despite mounting evidence from both official documents and testimonies from those who have been held in them.<\/p>\n

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday [21 September denounced Beijing\u2019s religious repression.<\/p>\n

\u201cHundreds of thousands and possibly millions of Uighurs are held against their will in so-called re-education camps where they\u2019re forced to endure severe political indoctrination and other awful abuses,\u201d Pompeo said.<\/p>\n

China has stepped up a crackdown in Xinjiang against what it calls Islamic extremism and separatist elements but many Muslims in the region accuse Beijing of religious and cultural repression.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
