Police in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region arrested Ilham Weli, <\/strong>Xinjiang Daily\u2019s deputy editor-in-chief; Memtimin Obul<\/strong> and Juret Haji<\/strong>, directors at the same newspaper; and Mirkami Ablimit,<\/strong>the head of the newspaper’s subsidiary Xinjiang Farmer’s Daily, between late July and early August for publishing \u201ctwo-faced\u201d articles in the newspaper\u2019s Uyghur language section. The vague term \u201ctwo-faced\u201d is adopted by the Chinese authorities to accuse those who allegedly secretly oppose government policies.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy inventing the crime of being \u2018two-faced\u2019, Chinese <\/em>authorities only highlight that there is no valid reason for arresting these journalists<\/em>,<\/em>\u201d said C\u00e9dric Alviani, the head of Reporters Without Borders (RSF)\u2019s East Asia bureau. \u201cNot satisfied with having virtually<\/em> banned the region\u2019s access to foreign media<\/em><\/a>, President<\/em> Xi Jinping<\/em> <\/a>is obviously trying to gag local media that does not print his propaganda.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

China\u2019s escalation of its mass, systemic crackdown of the Turkic Muslims in the past few years in the northwestern province of Xinjiang has seen increasing arbitrary detention of many Uyghur journalists<\/a> and their families<\/a>. Journalist lham Tohti<\/strong><\/a>,<\/strong> recipient of the Sakharov Prize and founder of Uyghur Online, was condemned to life imprisonment in 2014. Last month, the head of Buzzfeed Beijing<\/a> was expelled from China for her reporting on Xinjiang.<\/p>\n

Ranked 176th out of 180 territories in RSF\u2019s 2018 World Press Freedom Index<\/a>, China currently imprisons more than 50 journalists and bloggers.<\/p>\n
