The \u201c<\/span>sinicisation<\/span>\u201d of religion in China\u2019s troubled north-western region of Xinjiang<\/a> must be upheld to promote ethnic solidarity and religious harmony, a senior Communist party official has said.<\/span><\/p>\n China\u2019s state-run Xinhua news agency quoted You Quan, the head of the \u201cunited front work department\u201d, which oversees ethnic and religious affairs, while on a visit this week to Xinjiang, home to a large Muslim population.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe party\u2019s leadership over religious work must be upheld,\u201d You said, adding that \u201cthe infiltration of religious extremism must be guarded against\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n
