China has flatly denied that it has put a \u201cmillion Uyghurs\u201d in re-education camps, saying there are \u201cno such things\u201d in its northwestern Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR).<\/span><\/p>\n

It has set up \u201cvocational education and employment <\/span>centres<\/span>\u201d to provide livelihood skills to those who have committed minor <\/span>offences<\/span>, Chinese officials have told a United Nations rights panel.<\/span><\/p>\n

The officials also defended the banning of veils in the province, saying it was against local customs and was required to fight terrorism.<\/span><\/p>\n

This was China\u2019s first official denial of several reports that said hundreds of thousands from minority Muslim communities \u2013 mostly Uyghurs \u2013 have been packed off to camps.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last week, Gay McDougall, vice-chair of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination told the UN panel there were deep concerns about XUAR being turned into a \u201cmassive internment camp\u201d<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are deeply concerned at the many numerous and credible reports that we have received that in the name of combating religious extremism and maintaining social stability (China) has changed the Uyghur autonomous region into something that resembles a massive internship camp that is shrouded in secrecy, a sort of \u2018no rights zone,\u201d McDougall told the panel.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 49-member Chinese delegation that was attending the UN panel said the reports were false and baseless.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are no such things as \u2018re-education <\/span>centres<\/span>\u2019 or \u2018counter-extremism training <\/span>centres<\/span>\u2019 in Xinjiang,\u201d Hu Lianhe told the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe saying that \u2018a million Uyghurs are detained in re-education <\/span>centres<\/span>\u2019 is completely untrue,\u201d Hu said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith respect to persons involved only in minor <\/span>offences<\/span>, the authority provides them with assistance and education by assigning them to vocational education and employment training <\/span>centres<\/span> to acquire employment skills and legal knowledge, with a view to assisting their rehabilitation and reintegration,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026the legal rights of persons assigned to vocational training centers are duly protected and they are not subject to any arbitrary detention, let alone ill-treatment there,\u201d official news agency Xinhua quoted Hu as saying.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hu<\/span> also defended the ban on veils.<\/span><\/p>\n
