\u201cCalling a deer a horse,\u201d or \u201czhi lu wei ma<\/em>,\u201d is famous Chinese idiom originating from the Qin Dynasty (221\u2013206 BC).<\/p>\n

According to the story, Zhao Gao, the prime minister of the second emperor of the Qin Dynasty, once rode a deer on an outing with the emperor.<\/p>\n

The emperor asked: \u201cPrime Minister, why are you riding a deer?\u201d<\/p>\n

Zhao replied: \u201cYour Majesty, this is a horse.\u201d<\/p>\n

The emperor said: \u201cYou are mistaken! That is clearly a deer!\u201d<\/p>\n

Zhao said: \u201cIf Your Majesty does not believe me, then let\u2019s ask other officials for their opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked, some officials remained silent; others said it was a deer. Some, hoping to ingratiate themselves with Zhao, said it was a horse.<\/p>\n

The emperor thus got confused and believed what Zhao said. Then Zhao executed all the officials who said it was a deer, making the rest terrified of him.<\/p>\n

Since then, \u201ccalling a deer a horse\u201d has been used as an idiom to describe someone deliberately reversing black and white, misrepresenting the truth, and distorting the facts for ulterior motives.<\/p>\n

History now seems to repeat itself.<\/p>\n
