He collected four handwritten signs he had made, went to a road near his home, and took four photographs of himself holding each message in turn. Bare poplar trees skirt the road on either side, a dusting of frost lies on the ground, and loudspeakers sit atop a pole. The messages on the pieces of paper are as stark as the landscape. Penned in four languages, the one in English simply reads: \u201cHuman rights for the victims of enforced disappearances! Mutellip went missing after he was&nbsp;<a data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/uyghur\/student-07222013204016.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1541469411115000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGWbQ4PcBaIlahpiK0Ixq4lM2JI0w\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/uyghur\/student-07222013204016.html\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-decoration-line: underline !important;\">detained<\/a>&nbsp;while boarding a plane from Beijing to Turkey in July 2013. He was returning to Istanbul University to resume his master\u2019s degree studies. On January 15, 2014, police arrested him. By December 2014, he had been&nbsp;<a data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-rights-xinjiang\/china-jails-seven-students-of-uighur-scholar-for-separatism-idUSKBN0JN0AO20141209&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1541469411115000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEafdJ4I08uyOpSc3HLdNjR42BWXQ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-rights-xinjiang\/china-jails-seven-students-of-uighur-scholar-for-separatism-idUSKBN0JN0AO20141209\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-decoration-line: underline !important;\">tried and convicted<\/a>&nbsp;on charges of \u201cseparatism,\u201d then handed an undisclosed prison sentence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; outline: 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; line-height: 1.6em; color: rgb(68, 68, 68); font-family: Merriweather;\">Mutellip was part of&nbsp;<a data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/24\/world\/asia\/prosecution-of-uighur-students-underscores-perils-of-chinese-clampdown.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1541469411115000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFiOIDINVWlW1XuhumsnCqsZ4vZHQ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/24\/world\/asia\/prosecution-of-uighur-students-underscores-perils-of-chinese-clampdown.html\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-decoration-line: underline !important;\">a group of students<\/a>&nbsp;working with Uyghur academic&nbsp;<a data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/pen.org\/advocacy-case\/ilham-tohti\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1541469411115000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEi4TsTneK3Ubs3nV0q4dqNRhR_KA\" href=\"https:\/\/pen.org\/advocacy-case\/ilham-tohti\/\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-decoration-line: underline !important;\">Ilham Tohti<\/a>&nbsp;on the website \u201cUighurbiz,\u201d a Chinese language forum discussing economic, social and cultural issues facing the Uyghurs. Six of the students were also in jail by the end of 2014. As a result, Ilham understood the danger he was placing himself under by openly writing about racial discrimination and counterproductive policies. Yet, in 2018, support for ideas opposing state narratives is irrelevant as to whether a Uyghur scholar will end up disappeared or imprisoned. The strategies of compliance or maintaining a low profile no longer work. Simply being a Uyghur is the crime.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; outline: 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; line-height: 1.6em; color: rgb(68, 68, 68); font-family: Merriweather;\">The new tactic of suppression is the \u201ctwo-faced\u201d label. Uyghur academics with the praise of the Chinese government still ringing in their ears have quickly been recast as long-term conspirators against the state.&nbsp;<a data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/uyghur\/sentence-09282018145150.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1541469411115000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEWslgG3sDKlLmNf5qwXbeHnCqN2A\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/uyghur\/sentence-09282018145150.html\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-decoration-line: underline !important;\">Halmurat Ghopur<\/a>, the former president of Xinjiang Medical University Hospital, was absurdly accused of plotting for 33 years the establishment of an Islamic caliphate in Xinjiang. He received a death sentence with two-year suspension for his ability to conceal his true intentions. In the case of&nbsp;<a data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/livingotherwise.com\/2018\/10\/02\/abdukerim-rahman-surviving-without-books\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1541469411115000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGduo8yIJ9OsihpT37-1eQwdrsvtw\" href=\"https:\/\/livingotherwise.com\/2018\/10\/02\/abdukerim-rahman-surviving-without-books\/\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-decoration-line: underline !important;\">Abdukerim Rahman<\/a>, a literature professor at Xinjiang University detained in January 2018, one observer wrote: \u201che had been accepted and celebrated by the Chinese party-state for over 50 years. Four administrators and academics from Kashgar University were&nbsp;<a data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/uyghur\/professors-09192018144118.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1541469411115000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF0LZS8GjRjAJwPHO1-iHv5QUw3lQ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/uyghur\/professors-09192018144118.html\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-decoration-line: underline !important;\">removed from their posts<\/a>&nbsp;for exhibiting \u201ctwo-faced\u201d tendencies. The names of president Erkin Omer, vice president Muhter Abdughopur, and professors Qurban Osman and Gulnar Obul have been deleted from the&nbsp;<a data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.ksu.edu.cn\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1541469411115000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHi6AcaL9-2_K1feks_E1dV7ET3jA\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ksu.edu.cn\/\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-decoration-line: underline !important;\">university\u2019s website<\/a>. Uyghurs from all levels of society have ended up in the camps where political indoctrination and denunciations of Uyghur ethnic identity are part of the daily routine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; outline: 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; line-height: 1.6em; color: rgb(68, 68, 68); font-family: Merriweather;\">A sure way to end up in a camp is to have international links either through personal experience or relatives overseas. Given the necessity of transnational cooperation in academia, Uyghur scholars too have disappeared into the system of camps.&nbsp;<a data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/culturalpropertynews.org\/a-culture-destroyed-china-expunges-uyghur-identity\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1541469411115000&amp;usg=AFQjCNENR-gtKrcIgxV1V-vbXjRVgS-KNg\" href=\"https:\/\/culturalpropertynews.org\/a-culture-destroyed-china-expunges-uyghur-identity\/\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-decoration-line: underline !important;\">Dr. Rachel Harris<\/a>, lecturer at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, believes it was&nbsp;<a data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/10\/world\/asia\/china-xinjiang-rahile-dawut.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1541469411115000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGEf7DEbpiOY1C_lqO2KaYscMYZnA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/10\/world\/asia\/china-xinjiang-rahile-dawut.html\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-decoration-line: underline !important;\">Dr. Rahile Dawut<\/a>\u2019s network of colleagues abroad that precipitated the prominent folklorist\u2019s disappearance into an internment camp.
