Many Uighurs refer to the region as East Turkestan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 20px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 20px; color: rgb(67, 67, 67); font-family: Verdana, Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;\">Uighurs are placed under intense surveillance in their hometowns, with up to 1 million of them reportedly imprisoned in detention centers or re-education camps, where many are&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/life-inside-china-internment-camps-for-uighur-minority-in-xinjiang-bbc-report-2018-8\" style=\"color: rgb(16, 93, 145); text-decoration-line: underline;\">reportedly psychologically and mentally tortured<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 20px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 20px; color: rgb(67, 67, 67); font-family: Verdana, Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;\">Beijing sees its crackdown on Uighurs as a counterterrorism measure, and claimed the camps were&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/china-calls-xinjiang-uighur-detention-camps-free-vocational-training-2018-10\" style=\"color: rgb(16, 93, 145); text-decoration-line: underline;\">&#8220;free vocational training&#8221; that make life &#8220;colorful.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 20px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 20px; color: rgb(67, 67, 67); font-family: Verdana, Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;\">Lawmakers and international organizations are increasing pressure on China to stop these practices.
