THE CHINESE government has dropped a bombshell.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The country\u2019s far-west Xinjiang has just revised its legislation to allow local governments to detain those it believes to be influenced by religious extremism.<\/span><\/p>\n

The revised laws effectively give the government power to imprison people in propaganda camps for patriotic \u201cre-education\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The facilities have drawn an international outcry, with allegations of torture and authoritarian force used against the country\u2019s minority one million Uighur Muslim population.<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT IS THE NEW LAW?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

According to the new Article 33 of Xinjiang\u2019s regulations against extremism<\/a>: \u201cEducational transformation institutions such as vocational skill education and training <\/span>centres<\/span> shall teach the national common language, laws and regulations, and vocational skills.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It goes on: \u201cThe <\/span>centres<\/span> should <\/span>organise<\/span> and carry out anti-extremist ideological education, psychological correction, and <\/span>behaviour<\/span> correction to transform the thinking of the trainees so as to help them return to society, and to their family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This is vastly different to the previous law, which advised \u201cconcentrated education\u201d and \u201c<\/span>behaviour<\/span> correction\u201d against extremism, which was defined as inciting hatred, discrimination, and violence.<\/span><\/p>\n

It did not imply that subjects would be separated from their families, as the new article does.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new law also suggests the Chinese government is no longer denying the brutality of the camps, by acknowledging \u201cpsychological correction\u201d and that those detained will be isolated from society and their families.<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT\u2019S GOING ON IN XINJIANG?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Xinjiang is a <\/span>large<\/span> autonomous region in the country\u2019s northwest bordering the former Soviet Central Asian republics, Mongolia, Afghanistan, Pakistan <\/span>and<\/span> India.<\/span><\/p>\n

Estimated hundreds of thousands of Muslim Uighurs \u2014 a Turkic ethnic group primarily based in Xinjiang \u2014 have been subjected to arbitrary detention and torture here for years.<\/span><\/p>\n

As we speak, over a million Muslims in China\u2019s northwest region of Xinjiang are allegedly being held in prison-like camps disguised as \u201cre-education facilities\u201d, according to human rights <\/span>organisations<\/span>, US officials and survivors.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are also reports of Muslim inmates forced to eat pork and drink alcohol, which <\/span>are<\/span> forbidden in their religion.<\/span><\/p>\n
