\/asia\/china\/uyghur-tribunal-genocide-ruling-b1973108.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\u2018A historic day\u2019: Uyghurs welcome genocide ruling and call for action from world leaders\" class=\"i-amphtml-fill-content i-amphtml-replaced-content\" height=\"491\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/s3fs-public\/thumbnails\/image\/2019\/03\/12\/20\/Dabancheng-Xinjiang.jpg?quality=75&amp;width=230&amp;auto=webp\" width=\"652\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>As Ms Slotkin begins to answer, around half of the students stand up and leave the lecture theatre.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the Chinese students taunt and jeer Ms NurMuhammad on their way out, according to one person who was present.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of the Chinese students exiting the room, Congresswoman, just to let you know,\u201d a university staff member can be heard saying.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Slotkin responds: \u201cI feel for you and I\u2019m sorry that you\u2019re going through that and I\u2019m sorry that the students just felt the need to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-cRkqwB byyDTt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>The next day a Chinese student leader emailed the entire faculty of the Cornell Institute of Public Affairs to complain about the way they had been treated during the lecture.<\/p>\n<p>The email, which was signed by 88 students, also cited an earlier incident during the lecture where a different student mentioned that \u201c60 to 70 per cent\u201d of the two-year Master of Public Administration graduate programme were international students from China.<\/p>\n<div class=\"apester-loading-container media-loader apester-hidden\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"in-unit container active\" id=\"monetization-ad-container\">\n<div class=\"in-unit embed\" id=\"in-unit-da-player-200d5712-d5e4-458b-aeaa-4d5f6e588f31\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"in-unit header\" id=\"in_unit_header_da\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"in-unit footer\" id=\"in_unit_footer_da\">\n<div class=\"in-unit footer-content\">\n<div class=\"in-unit footer teaser\">\n<div class=\"in-unit footer teaser-text\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"companion container-display\" id=\"apester-companion-display-f1e38290-16b7-4d08-aeaa-4db04e938160\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>The email stated the students had left because of the \u201cextremely hostile\u201d atmosphere, adding: \u201cAt that moment, we were not sitting in a classroom; we were crucified in a courtroom for crimes that we did not commit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They requested a formal response from the school management, \u201cso that we know we made the right decision of choosing CIPA and Cornell\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"sc-bSakgD dMAHhA image align-none\"><figcaption class=\"sc-djUGQo sc-hjQCSK hOGov kBSEFx caption\">\n<div class=\"sc-edUIhV whTMY\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In response, Cornell Institute for Public Affairs Director Professor Matt Hall wrote a faculty-wide email, saying \u201cthe human rights abuses of the Uyghur people, are valuable points of discussion and critical to promoting open dialogue\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-csDNRp fnhorx teads\">\n<div class=\"sc-jVCNtP HtAMo\">\n<div class=\"sc-DdwlG dwppNb\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time, we must also respect that walkouts are a legitimate form of protest and an appropriate expression of disapproval,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>It called on students to be \u201crespectful and civil toward our colleagues\u201d, and not use social media to \u201ccast them as a demographic group or in derogatory ways\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Hall\u2019s email set-off a cascade of emails discussing the incident, with many students expressing support for Ms NurMuhammad.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-kKrQFk bIbFsn\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-kKrQFk bIbFsn\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ms NurMuhammad told&nbsp;<em>The Independent<\/em>&nbsp;the public humiliation she experienced during the walkout had been exacerbated by the \u201cdehumanising\u201d experience of being the subject of a school-wide discussion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe emails showed that they were trying to shift the focus of what happened. They have denied my existence, literally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy brother has been arbitrarily for five years, my people are suffering genocide at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they walked out, the signal they gave me is that your personal suffering is not welcome to be shared in this space. They\u2019re giving me this signal that you have to be silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis stress and this worry has accumulated for too long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to a request for comment, Cornell University media relations department provided<em>&nbsp;The Independent&nbsp;<\/em>with a follow-up email sent to school staff and students from Professor Hall and the Dean of the Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy, Colleen Barry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConcerns have also been raised about the safety of individual students. Others have expressed worry that Chinese students are not welcome at Cornell,\u201d the email said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll are welcome and should feel safe at Cornell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also expressed concern about the \u201caggressive nature\u201d of discussions about the incident in emails and on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese events have spurred divisive discourse and engaged us in serious conversation related to how best to speak up in the face of genocide and human rights atrocities against the Uyghur people.&nbsp; At the same time, they remind us how harmful it is when conversation devolves into derogatory anti-Asian expression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms NurMuhammad said staff had been in touch with her privately since the walkout, but that she was not satisfied with the university\u2019s response and wanted a public apology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re talking about anti-Asian? What are you talking about? I\u2019m Asian too. There is very little understanding of what I\u2019m going through. I felt alone.\u201d<span style=\"text-align: center; background-color: #f5f2f0;\">Protesters rally against the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games on International Human Rights Day outside the TCL Theatre in Los Angeles in 2021<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Guled Mire, a fellow student at the institute and Fulbright scholar, told&nbsp;<em>The Independent&nbsp;<\/em>the students\u2019 actions were part of an alarming trend of Chinese Communist Party influence on free speech at American universities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019ve seen recently is a change in tactics in the way the CCP is extending control over influence in American universities through its student populations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be many who went through years of indoctrination of CCP propaganda and genocide denialism narratives, and that\u2019s on full display. But there is also an unbelievable amount of pressure on these students, because we know what happens if they speak out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mire, a human rights advocate from New Zealand, called for Cornell University to be more vocal in its support for free speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe university needs to take a strong stand that they will not allow any activities that are designed to intimidate or silence any discussion of human rights violations, particularly when it comes to genocide. If we can\u2019t do it at a university, then where can we?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms NurMuhammad, originally from Xinjian, moved to New Zealand in 2010 and gained citizenship there.
